Storm Isha claims four lives; new storm Jocelyn heads to the UK – latest updates

January 22, 2024

As Storm Isha departs the United Kingdom, another storm closely follows, with four fatalities confirmed from the recent severe weather.

Isha battered the UK last night, and now Storm Jocelyn is poised to bring heavy rains to Britain from tomorrow into Wednesday.

A pensioner and three others lost their lives in road collisions caused by winds and falling trees from the severe storm, while numerous weather warnings persist.

An amber alert for strong winds covers the north and west of Scotland tomorrow evening, along with yellow warnings for wind across England and Wales and rain in western Scotland.

Impacts of Storm Isha include toppled lorries, life-threatening winds of nearly 110mph, and tens of thousands without power.

Train services face disruptions following a 'wild night' of extreme weather, leading to a rare red Met Office weather warning for northeast Scotland.

DLP Councillor Ashleen Schenning expresses devastation over a fatality caused by a fallen tree, and authorities seek information on the circumstances leading to the tragic accident.

Cllr Schenning adds, 'It was cruel. The weather was cruel. You can see, even as I was coming here today, there’s so many roads closed, so many trees down.'

Three trees from the Dark Hedges, a Game of Thrones-famous woodland in Northern Ireland, fell due to Storm Isha's 'unyielding power.'

The Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust managing the site acknowledges the regular occurrence of storm damage but emphasizes the unpredictable risk to these mature heritage trees.
