The USA has made history by advancing to the next stage of the men’s T20 Cricket World Cup after their game against Ireland on Friday was abandoned due to a wet outfield, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Heavy rainfall overnight in Lauderhill, Florida, left the field unplayable despite efforts by the ground staff. Consequently, both teams earned a point from the abandoned match.
This crucial point confirmed the USA's qualification for the Super 8 stage of the tournament, a remarkable feat considering this is the team's first ever appearance in the T20 World Cup.
The USA's performances in the group stage have been a highlight of the tournament. They secured a notable victory against powerhouse Pakistan and narrowly lost to India. As one of the co-hosts for the T20 World Cup, the USA began their campaign with a strong win over Canada, finishing the Group A stage with five points.
Due to the match's abandonment, Pakistan was eliminated from the tournament.
In the T20 World Cup, the top two teams from each of the four groups progress to the Super 8 stage. These teams are then divided into two groups of four, where they compete in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.
The Super 8 stage begins on June 19, with all 12 games being played across four Caribbean islands: Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent.
