A violent altercation erupted on the streets of Gelsenkirchen as English hooligans attacked a bar where Serbian supporters were gathered ahead of the Serbia vs. England game at Euro 2024.
The incident took place shortly after 3:30 pm local time at the Aleppo bar on Arminstraße in central Gelsenkirchen.
Eyewitnesses reported that the English hooligans hurled various projectiles at the Serbians, leading to a chaotic scene. "Everything you can imagine" was thrown, according to those present. The situation escalated until the arrival of 200 German riot police, who intervened to restore order.
Among the injured was a man from Birmingham who sustained serious head injuries. Despite the severity of his wounds, he refused to provide his name to the officers at the scene. Medical personnel were seen administering heavy bandaging to his head.
The English hooligans quickly fled the scene following the attack. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about hooliganism and violence surrounding major football events.
