Bryson DeChambeau holds off Rory McIlroy in nerve-shredding finale

June 17, 2024

Bryson DeChambeau of the United States celebrated his second US Open title on Sunday as Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

In a tense finale, DeChambeau edged out Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, carding a final round of one-over 71 to finish one stroke ahead at six-under overall. This victory adds to DeChambeau's first major win in 2020.

Rory McIlroy, currently ranked world No. 3, had surged ahead from three shots behind to two shots ahead of DeChambeau but missed two crucial putts from within four feet on the last two holes.

DeChambeau, needing a par on the final hole for victory, held his nerve to secure the win, overcoming the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the PGA Championship to Xander Schauffele the previous month.

An emotional DeChambeau dedicated his win to his late father, Jon, in his winner’s speech, which fell on Father’s Day. "First off, I want to say a Happy Father’s Day to every father out there. This one is for him," DeChambeau said.

DeChambeau’s win marks him as the second golfer to secure a major title after joining the LIV Golf series, following Brooks Koepka's win at the PGA Championship. The victory further solidified DeChambeau's popularity, especially with his active engagement with fans throughout the tournament.

In his victor's speech, DeChambeau expressed gratitude to the fans and fulfilled his promise to let them touch the trophy, carrying it around the crowd at the 18th green. "I just can’t thank you guys enough for all the support this week," he told the cheering fans. "You guys mean the world to me. You are the best fans in the world and I can’t thank you enough."

The win at Pinehurst not only showcased DeChambeau's golfing prowess but also his ability to connect with the audience, making him a crowd favourite at this year’s majors.
