Netanyahu Dissolves Israel's War Cabinet after Government Shakeup

June 17, 2024

According to Israeli officials, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dissolved the influential War Cabinet responsible for steering the war in Gaza.

This decision follows the resignation of key member Benny Gantz, who left the government due to frustrations with Netanyahu's handling of the conflict. Gantz’s departure highlights Netanyahu's increasing reliance on his ultranationalist allies to govern.

With the dissolution of the War Cabinet, Netanyahu plans to address sensitive war-related issues in smaller forums, including his security Cabinet. This Cabinet includes far-right members who are opposed to cease-fire agreements and have expressed support for reoccupying Gaza.

The War Cabinet was initially formed for unified decision-making following the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel. It comprised three members: Netanyahu, Gantz, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Gantz’s role was crucial in maintaining international credibility for Israel during the conflict.

Netanyahu's current government is the most religious and right-wing in Israel's history. Without Gantz’s support, Netanyahu becomes more dependent on his far-right allies who have threatened to destabilise the government if their demands are not met.

Critics argue that Netanyahu's war decisions are heavily influenced by these ultranationalists, a claim he denies, asserting that his actions are in the country's best interest.
