Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History with Six European Championship Appearances

Cristiano Ronaldo has cemented his place in football history by becoming the first player to appear in six European Championships. The 39-year-old forward began his 2024 campaign with Portugal against Czechia on Tuesday, aiming to reclaim the title Portugal won in 2016 when they defeated host country France 1-0 for their first European trophy.

Ronaldo's journey in the European Championships started in 2004 when he made his debut on home soil in Portugal. He scored his first goal in the tournament against Czechia, the same team Portugal faced in their opening match of the 2024 championship, exactly 20 years later.

In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Ronaldo reflected on his long career with the national team:

"Today begins another chapter in our history. I fondly remember my first day with the national team, a journey of challenges and victories. Now, I have the honour of being alongside a team of champions, full of talent and determination. With everyone's strength and support, we turn dreams into reality. Let's, together, fight for another triumph. United, we are unstoppable. Go Portugal!"

Since his debut in 2004, Ronaldo has been consistent in Portugal's European Championship squads, participating in the tournaments held in 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 (played in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), and now 2024.

Ronaldo is not only known for his longevity but also for his goal-scoring prowess. With 14 goals, he holds the record for the most goals by any player in the history of the European Championships.

His most prolific tournament was the 2020 edition, where he scored five goals.

In addition to Ronaldo's milestone, another Portuguese player made history during the match against Czechia. Centre-back Pepe became the oldest player to ever feature in a European Championship game, at the age of 41 years and 113 days.

As Portugal embarks on their 2024 European Championship journey, Ronaldo's leadership and experience will be invaluable. His presence on the team, along with other talented players, fuels the nation's hope for another triumphant campaign.

With a united team spirit and Ronaldo's enduring talent, Portugal aims to turn their dreams into reality once again.
