Andy Murray has been ruled out of Wimbledon after undergoing back surgery to address a spinal cyst.
The three-time Grand Slam winner retired injured during the first set of his second-round match against Jordan Thompson at Queen's Club on Wednesday.
Murray had scans that revealed the cyst, which caused numbness in his right leg just before his match against Thompson.
The surgery, performed on Saturday, means Murray will be sidelined for about six weeks, which casts doubt on the possibility of his participation in the Paris Olympics as well.
Wimbledon, starting on July 1, was expected to be his last appearance at the Grand Slam.
The ATP tweeted their support: "After an operation on a spinal cyst, Andy Murray is sadly out of Wimbledon. Rest up and recover Andy, we'll miss seeing you there."
Murray had only recently returned to action last month after an eight-week hiatus due to damaged ankle ligaments sustained in late March.
Reflecting on his Queen's Club retirement, Murray said he felt discomfort during his pre-match warm-up and experienced weakness and lack of coordination in his right leg.
Despite attempting to play through the pain, he ultimately had to withdraw from the match, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.
Murray's participation in the Paris Olympics where he was named in Great Britain's squad due to his previous singles gold medals in London 2012 and Rio 2016, is now uncertain.
