Nearly 10 Million Pounds of Meat and Poultry Dishes Recalled Due to Fear of Contamination

October 11, 2024

A company is recalling nearly 10 million pounds of meat and poultry products made at an Oklahoma plant due to potential contamination with listeria, a bacteria that can cause severe illness and even death.

BrucePac, based in Woodburn, Oregon, initiated the recall after routine testing by the U.S. Department of Agriculture detected listeria in samples of poultry. Further testing traced the contamination to BrucePac's facility in Durant, Oklahoma. The recall involves 75 different meat and chicken products, including grilled chicken breast strips, which were produced between June 19 and October 8. These products were distributed to restaurants, food service vendors, and other locations across the U.S.

The affected products have best-by dates ranging from June 19, 2025, to October 8, 2025. Officials have urged consumers to discard any of these items that may still be stored in refrigerators or freezers. There have been no confirmed reports of illness connected to the recall so far.

Listeria infection can cause serious health problems, particularly for older adults, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, and in severe cases, stiff neck, confusion, and convulsions.

These can develop anywhere from a few days to 10 weeks after consuming contaminated food. According to the CDC, about 1,600 people in the U.S. contract listeria annually, with approximately 260 fatalities.
