US to Deploy about 100 Troops to Operate Advanced Anti-missile System in Israel

October 13, 2024

The U.S. deployment of the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional troops to Israel comes amid escalating tensions with Iran, following attacks attributed to the country.

This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Israel’s air defenses against potential missile threats, particularly from Iran, as concerns grow over further hostilities.

The THAAD system, designed to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes, enhances Israel's existing defense capabilities, such as the Iron Dome and David's Sling, by adding another layer of protection.

Approximately 100 U.S. troops will operate the system, marking a significant but not unprecedented U.S. military presence inside Israel. The timing of this deployment follows recent attacks and ongoing consultations between the U.S. and Israel about a measured response to Iran, with U.S. officials advising caution against targeting sensitive Iranian sites like nuclear facilities or oil fields.

In addition to the THAAD deployment, the U.S. has significantly increased its military presence across the Middle East, positioning naval assets and bolstering air defenses in the region in response to growing threats, particularly following Hamas' attack on Israel in October 2023. This buildup demonstrates the U.S.'s commitment to ensuring regional stability and supporting its allies amidst ongoing tensions with Iran.
