A man was taken into custody near a rally for former President Donald Trump in Coachella, California, after officers stopped his black SUV at a checkpoint. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco suggested that the swift action by authorities may have "stopped another assassination attempt."
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 12, 2024, just before 5pm. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office confirmed that deputies stationed at the rally stopped the driver and arrested him for possessing a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine. The man was later booked at the John J. Benoit Detention Centre.
The US Secret Service, which was promptly informed, said it conducted an intelligence interview with the individual, adding that the situation had no impact on the rally or Trump's safety. Both the former president and event attendees are safe, and the incident is under further investigation.
