Comedian Told to Go Back to His Country’ in Racist Attack

October 14, 2024

Comedian Ignacio Lopez has shared his distress after experiencing a racist attack while travelling to a gig. Lopez, who is of Spanish and Welsh heritage, took to social media to recount the incident, which occurred during a train journey from Leeds. Known for his stand-up comedy and appearances on shows like *Have I Got News for You*, Lopez is currently touring the UK with his show *Señor Self Destruct*.

In a series of posts, Lopez explained how he encountered hostility from a fellow passenger who refused to allow him to sit down, claiming the seat was taken by his bag. After some back and forth, the man reluctantly moved, but the situation escalated when the man asked Lopez where he was getting off and then told him "go back to your own country."

Lopez tried to remain calm, responding with humour rather than engaging in the argument. Despite the uncomfortable atmosphere, other passengers seemed unsettled but didn't intervene. One woman even offered to swap seats with Lopez, but he declined, not wanting to inconvenience anyone.

As the confrontation continued, the man grew angrier, especially after Lopez mentioned that his leather jacket was from Morocco, which seemed to further provoke him. The man eventually left the train, shouting more racist remarks as he departed.

Lopez shared the incident on social media to highlight the ongoing problem of racism and xenophobia, despite his usual positive experiences while travelling in the UK.
