Hollywood Director Calls Out Elon Musk for Copying His Fictional Robots

October 14, 2024

Australian filmmaker Alex Proyas has publicly accused Elon Musk of copying designs from his 2004 film "I, Robot" for Tesla's newly unveiled vehicles.

Proyas, best known for his adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s "I, Robot", took to X (formerly Twitter), which is owned by Musk, to express his frustration. In a post, the 61-year-old director shared side-by-side images of the Tesla Cybercab, Robovan, and Tesla Optimus robots alongside the futuristic designs from his film. He captioned the post with a pointed question: “Hey Elon, can I have my designs back please?”

The Tesla Cybercab, which Musk debuted at the "We, Robot" event, is a self-driving autonomous vehicle expected to be available to the public by 2027. The Robovan, also autonomous, is a larger vehicle capable of seating up to 20 people, designed for potential commercial applications. Proyas' "I, Robot", set in the year 2035, featured advanced humanoid robots and futuristic transportation designs, which have maintained a cult following despite mixed reviews upon release.

Proyas' tweet, which humorously implied that Musk's designs were reminiscent of those from his film, has sparked interest among fans of both "I, Robot" and Tesla, with many weighing in on the apparent similarities. Neither Musk nor Tesla has publicly responded to the director's remarks.
