Biden Admin Slammed with Lawsuit Over Alleged Refusal to Purge Voter Rolls

October 17, 2024

The state of Florida has filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration, specifically targeting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), for allegedly refusing to provide immigration status verification that the state claims is necessary to maintain the integrity of its voter rolls.

Florida argues that the DHS is required to respond to state inquiries under federal law, particularly through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program, which the state uses to verify citizenship and immigration status for individuals on voter registration lists.

According to the lawsuit, Florida's Department of State has identified individuals who are suspected of not being U.S. citizens but claims it cannot verify their status due to a lack of unique identifiers required to use the SAVE system. The state contends that when it reached out to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for further verification, the request was denied.

Florida is seeking legal relief to compel DHS to provide the necessary immigration data, arguing that failure to do so prevents the state from ensuring that only U.S. citizens are included on its voter rolls. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody stated that this legal action is aimed at protecting the voting rights of U.S. citizens and preventing noncitizens from being improperly registered to vote.

The lawsuit highlights the ongoing tensions between states and the federal government over immigration-related issues, particularly in the context of voter registration and election integrity.
