Ella Dowling, a 19-year-old student, was left with severe facial injuries after being attacked by a stranger on a bus.
The attacker, 53-year-old Darren Taylor, made inappropriate comments towards Ella and her friends before launching a brutal assault, in which he repeatedly bit her nose and mouth.
The attack lasted for about five minutes, and left Ella roughed up and needing 50 stitches. Her lip and nose were severely damaged, and part of her face was nearly torn off.
Ella was rushed to Cheltenham Hospital and later transferred to Gloucester Hospital for emergency surgery. Though her physical wounds are healing, she has been left with permanent scarring and suffers from PTSD, which has greatly affected her daily life. She avoids public transport and requires emotional support when leaving the house.
Taylor, who was intoxicated during the incident, was arrested on charges of grievous bodily harm with intent. In March 2024, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced in July to six years and nine months in prison. He was also issued a lifelong restraining order. Despite his sentencing, Taylor has launched an appeal against his punishment.
Ella continues to cope with the psychological and physical effects of the attack, expressing that her disfigurement is a constant reminder of the trauma she endured.
