Tulsi Gabbard, the former Democratic congresswoman and 2020 presidential candidate, announced at a Trump rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, that she is officially joining the Republican Party.
This significant shift comes after Gabbard had previously declared herself an independent in 2022 following her departure from the Democratic Party.
Gabbard, who recently joined Donald Trump's campaign as an honorary co-chair for his transition team, expressed her admiration for Trump's leadership, citing his efforts to reshape the Republican Party as a "party of the people" and "party of peace." During the rally, Gabbard emphasized her pride in aligning with the GOP, acknowledging its historical roots in fighting against slavery and promoting equality.
Trump welcomed her endorsement with surprise and praise, acknowledging her longstanding independent stance. Gabbard, known for her criticism of Democratic figures, notably challenged Kamala Harris during the 2020 Democratic primary debates over her record as California’s attorney general.
After serving as Hawaii’s representative in Congress from 2013 to 2021, Gabbard has since embraced a more conservative platform, frequently speaking at right-leaning events and hosting her own podcast. Her decision to join the GOP signals her continued political evolution.
