Elon Musk's America PAC has come under scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) over a controversial daily $1 million giveaway aimed at promoting voter registration in seven key swing states ahead of the 2024 election.
The DOJ’s Public Integrity Section, which handles election-related cases, sent a letter to Musk’s PAC, raising concerns that the initiative may violate federal laws, particularly the ban on paying people to register to vote.
The contest, which Musk announced at a town hall in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, requires participants to be registered voters in swing states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—and to sign a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments. Musk has also indicated that winners must be spokespersons for the petition, often appearing in support of Donald Trump.
Legal experts are divided on the legality of Musk's lottery. Some argue that it could violate election laws, while others believe it operates in a legal gray area.
Pressure for a full investigation has been mounting, with former government officials and prosecutors urging the DOJ to intervene.
The giveaway, intended to continue until Election Day, is part of Musk’s broader effort to support Trump’s presidential campaign through America PAC.
So far, four winners have been announced, and Musk's efforts have generated significant attention as he leverages his wealth—estimated at $240 billion—to influence the election.
