Finnish operator Cinia announced that an undersea telecommunications cable connecting Finland and Germany has suffered an unexplained fault, disrupting communication services.
The C-Lion1 cable spans nearly 1,200 kilometers and is a critical link between Finland and central Europe, running alongside other infrastructure like gas pipelines and power cables.
The cause of the fault remains unclear. However, it comes amid U.S. warnings about increased Russian military activity around undersea cables, raising concerns of potential sabotage.
U.S. officials previously noted Russia’s interest in targeting such infrastructure, and investigations in 2023 revealed suspected Russian spy ships in Nordic waters.
The extent of the disruption is not fully known, though critical data is often rerouted through alternative cables to ensure continuity. Cinia is investigating and has yet to provide further details.
