Elon Musk Floats Buying MSNBC, with Other Billionaires also Eyeing the Firm

November 27, 2024

Elon Musk's recent remarks about MSNBC, including labelling it as “scum of the Earth” and joking about potentially buying the channel, have stirred concerns among the network’s staff and prompted speculation about its future.

While Musk’s posts might seem unserious, they coincide with significant changes in the corporate structure of MSNBC's parent company, Comcast.

MSNBC and the SpinCo Spinoff

  • Comcast’s Strategy: Comcast announced plans to separate its cable channels, including MSNBC, CNBC, and others, into a new entity called "SpinCo." The move aims to improve shareholder value by allowing Comcast to focus on other ventures while giving cable channels more operational freedom.
  • Tax Implications: Due to the tax-free nature of the spinoff, industry analysts predict a two-year period before any potential sale of MSNBC or other assets could be considered.
  • Growth Potential: Executives involved with "SpinCo" are reportedly enthusiastic about using the new structure to invest further in MSNBC and other cable properties, rather than selling them off.

Musk’s Involvement and Staff Concerns

  • Musk’s Comments: Musk’s incendiary posts, coupled with his purchase of Twitter (now X), have raised concerns about his interest in acquiring media properties.
  • Staff Anxiety: The timing of Musk’s remarks, coupled with broader political tensions surrounding the reelection of Donald Trump and Comcast’s restructuring, has amplified unease among MSNBC employees.

Interest from Other Buyers

  • Liberal Investors: Some philanthropists and media figures with liberal leanings have expressed interest in MSNBC, reassuring staff that Musk and his allies are unlikely to dominate any potential bidding process.
  • Comcast’s Position: Despite Musk’s rhetoric and external interest, Comcast has not indicated any immediate plans to sell MSNBC. Analysts suggest such a move would conflict with the broader objectives of "SpinCo."

For now, Musk’s remarks appear to be more noise than substance, as Comcast’s focus remains on leveraging "SpinCo" for growth rather than dismantling its cable channel portfolio.

However, the evolving media environment—and Musk’s penchant for disruptive moves—will likely keep the speculation alive.
