France’s President Emmanuel Macron has appointed François Bayrou as the country’s new prime minister, following the resignation of Michel Barnier after a failed vote of no confidence.

The move is seen as Macron's attempt to stabilise his government amidst a deepening political crisis that has eroded his authority.

François Bayrou, a seasoned centrist politician and long-time ally of Macron, will lead efforts to restore government functionality and address the nation’s pressing challenges. Known for his pragmatic approach, Bayrou faces the daunting task of building consensus in a fractious parliament.

The resignation of Barnier, triggered by the no-confidence vote, highlights the fragility of Macron's administration. Macron’s government faces strong opposition from both the left-wing and far-right blocs, complicating any attempts to pass critical legislation, including the national budget.

Bayrou’s immediate priority will be securing parliamentary approval for the budget, a task made difficult by the fragmented assembly.

Macron’s broader agenda, including economic reforms and international commitments, remains in jeopardy unless political stability can be achieved.

This crisis comes as Macron grapples with declining public approval and increasing discontent over economic and social issues. His party's diminished majority in the National Assembly has left his administration vulnerable to opposition challenges, amplifying the need for cross-party collaboration.

Bayrou’s appointment is a calculated gamble to bridge political divides and reassert government authority. His success will likely depend on his ability to negotiate with adversaries and deliver tangible results in a polarised political landscape.

Failure to do so could further weaken Macron’s presidency and destabilize France’s political environment.
