Stanley, the popular drinkware brand, has issued a recall of approximately 2.6 million travel mugs due to potential burn hazards, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The recall affects Stanley’s Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the U.S., which feature polypropylene lids that can loosen under heat and torque, posing a risk of burns.
The recalled mugs, available in 12 to 20-ounce sizes and a variety of colours such as white, black, and green, were sold at major retailers including Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. They retailed for $20 to $50 depending on the model.
Stanley has received over 90 reports globally regarding issues with the detached lids, including 38 reports of burn injuries, 11 of which required medical attention. Sixteen complaints and two injuries were reported in the U.S.
The CPSC advises consumers to stop using the affected travel mugs immediately and to contact Stanley for a free replacement lid with shipping included.
Instructions for identifying the recalled models and requesting replacement lids are available on a dedicated recall website established by Stanley.
This recall comes as Stanley continues to enjoy heightened popularity thanks to a social media-driven brand revival.
Since a 2020 rebranding aimed at attracting women and expanding its consumer base, Stanley has relied on influencers and an array of colourful, stylish designs to position its products as status symbols, according to marketing experts.
Stanley has yet to comment publicly on the recall, which follows their successful transformation into a sought-after lifestyle brand, fuelled by trust and social media buzz.
