Tube and Rail Fares in London to Rise by 4.6% Next March

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced a 4.6% increase in Tube and rail fares starting March 2, 2025, aligning with rises in regulated train fares across England.

The fare hike, which will see daily caps increase by 40p-70p depending on the zones travelled, is aimed at securing funding for vital transport projects.

Bus and tram fares will remain frozen at £1.75 for unlimited journeys within an hour, maintaining affordability for many Londoners.

Khan stated that the fare adjustments are necessary following the government’s indication that increased fares would help secure national funding for projects like Superloop 2 and Tube upgrades.

The Department for Transport (DfT) clarified that fare hikes were not explicitly required as a condition for additional funding.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ October budget included £500 million in extra funding for Transport for London (TfL). The funding will contribute to ongoing and future projects aimed at improving London's transport network, promoting sustainability, and advancing infrastructure.

The announcement comes amid concerns over the high cost of rail travel in the UK. A study by Transport & Environment found UK rail fares to be among the highest in Europe, with Great Western Railway fares more than double the EU average for similar routes.

Commuters using TfL rail and Tube services will face higher daily travel expenses, potentially straining budgets for regular travellers.

Maintaining the Hopper bus fare and freezing bus and tram rates may help cushion the impact for those relying on these services. While fare hikes may be unpopular, the funding could enhance transport capacity, efficiency, and sustainability in the long term.

Mayor Khan emphasized his record of making fares affordable and reiterated that the increase is crucial to ensuring London’s transport system continues to improve while supporting broader environmental and economic goals.
