Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday, stating that he will step down as both prime minister and leader of the ruling Liberal Party once a new party leader is selected.
Speaking at a news conference in Ottawa, the 53-year-old leader said, “I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its new leader.”
Trudeau also confirmed that Canada’s parliament would be suspended until March 24 to allow time for the selection of his successor.
Reflecting on his time in office, Trudeau expressed one significant regret: failing to reform Canada’s electoral system. “If I have one regret, particularly as we approach this election — well, probably many regrets that I will think of,” he said. “But I do wish we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could simply choose a second choice, or a third choice on the same ballot.”
The announcement comes ahead of a general election expected later this year, marking a significant turning point for Canadian politics.
