Apple AI Faces Backlash over Misleading News Summaries

Apple’s AI-driven summary feature has come under fire for sending inaccurate push notifications about sensitive stories, including Gisele Pelicot's mass rape trial, Britain's grooming gang scandal, and a prison officer filmed having sex with an inmate.

Multiple news organisations have raised concerns with Apple over the feature, which is part of Apple Intelligence available on iPhones.

The AI summarises notifications to highlight "key details," but has been criticised for creating misleading and inaccurate headlines from stories by outlets like the BBC, Sky News, and the Telegraph.

The National Union of Journalists has called for the feature to be revoked:

"The inaccurate news summaries shared to audiences through Apple Intelligence demonstrate the feature is not fit for purpose."

The controversy highlights growing concerns about the use of AI in journalism and the potential for automation to spread misinformation, particularly in stories involving sensitive or complex issues.

Apple has not yet responded publicly to the criticism or indicated whether changes will be made to the feature.
