Donald Trump has announced that TikTok will get a temporary reprieve as one of his first actions upon taking office today.
Speaking at a rally, Trump revealed plans to sign an executive order extending the deadline for TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app to a non-Chinese owner.
This decision comes after TikTok faced a weekend shutdown in the U.S. due to a law signed by former President Joe Biden, which mandated the app’s divestment on national security grounds by Sunday. Over the weekend, millions of U.S. users reported losing access to the platform, sparking uncertainty about its future.
Despite previously supporting a ban on TikTok, Trump emphasized his commitment to giving young users and creators renewed access to the platform. TikTok expressed gratitude in a statement, thanking the incoming president for providing "necessary clarity and assurance."
This move to bring back TikTok is seen as a direct appeal to younger voters, many of whom are active on the platform. The company's CEO is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration later today, signaling hope for a deal that ensures TikTok’s continued operation in the U.S.
