HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY!

March 8, 2021

Happy International Women’s Day!

There is a high likelihood that this is not the first time you’ve heard of the phrase “International Women’s Day”, however do you actually know the fundamental reason and goals for the day?

The International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. It is celebrated on March 8th, and has been since the first edition in 1911. This means that this year’s international women’s day celebration is the 110th edition.

The International Women’s Day is a United Nation-sanctioned global holiday, which seeks to celebrate women’s contributions to society, raise awareness for the fight for gender equality and inspires support for organizations that help women globally.

The theme for the International Women’s Day 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge which encourages us to challenge societal biases and misconceptions regarding women and gender roles, in order to create a more inclusive and gender-equal world.

This year’s edition is particularly special as we see great strides taken by women in the past 1 year. For the first time in history, we have women in the highest rungs of economic and political power, Kamala Harris being the first female Vice President of the USA, Whitney Wolfe Herd, the world's youngest female self-made billionaire, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala the first-ever female Director-General of the World Trade Organization

As various studies have shown, women are, or in some cases, even more equipped than men to thrive and produce great results in leadership roles. As we celebrate today, let us not forget to #ChooseToChallenge our preconceived ideologies and policies regarding women and their roles in society.
