Israel’s recent failure to fully meet U.S. demands on improving humanitarian access to Gaza has raised concerns among international aid organisations and the Biden administration.
The U.S. requested measures such as increased food and aid deliveries to Gaza, daily entry of 350 truckloads of goods, opening an additional crossing, and providing access for aid workers to conflict-affected northern Gaza areas.
However, as per a recent report by eight major aid organisations, Israel has only partially complied with a few of these requests, while completely failing to meet most others.
Israel’s military operations in northern Gaza have restricted aid flow and led to significant civilian displacement. Despite incremental improvements announced by Israel, such as a tentative plan to open a fifth crossing, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains severe.
Aid agencies including Save the Children and Mercy Corps note that access for essential goods and services still falls far short of the U.S.-set benchmarks thereby indicating that it may re-evaluate military support to Israel if access does not improve, but has not yet specified potential actions in response to these shortfalls.
