Dawn Robinson, the Grammy-nominated singer and former En Vogue member, has revealed that she has been living in her car for nearly three years—a decision she now fully embraces.
In a candid YouTube video, the 58-year-old opened up about her journey, explaining that what started as a necessity has become a lifestyle she enjoys.
"You guys, for the past three—almost three—years, I have been living in my car. I said it. Oh my god, it's out."
Robinson initially moved in with her parents during the pandemic but left after a falling-out with her mother. She briefly stayed with her manager in Los Angeles, then lived in a hotel for eight months, covered by him. However, the financial uncertainty made her rethink her living situation.
After researching alternative living communities, she decided to give car living a try.
"I thought, 'Wow, these people. I could do this, I think.' And I ended up in my car."
Though the first night was scary, Robinson quickly adapted and now enjoys the freedom of minimalist living.
"I felt like I was on a camping trip. It was the right thing to do—I didn’t regret it."
Robinson gained fame in the 1990s with En Vogue, known for hits like Hold On and My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It). After leaving the group, she joined R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl, alongside Raphael Saadiq and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
Despite her unconventional lifestyle, Robinson remains positive and independent, embracing a nomadic way of life that many are beginning to explore.
