Clarks Employee Loses her Job at the Same Shop She Worked for 68 Years

October 20, 2024

Jill Cornick, a dedicated Clarks employee for nearly seven decades, has been let go from the shoe shop she worked at since 1956 after receiving just a week's notice. Starting at the age of 14, Jill devoted 68 years to the Clarks store in Blandford, Dorset, where she played numerous roles, including manager and master shoe fitter. She even postponed her honeymoon in 1969 to attend a training course and raised her son, Jason, in a playpen on the shop floor.

Jill's long career came to an abrupt end in April when Clarks announced the immediate closure of the shop. Despite the sudden news, her last day was marked by a heartfelt outpouring of support, with customers visiting to say goodbye, bringing flowers and chocolates in appreciation of her years of service.

Jill had helped multiple generations of families with their footwear needs during her time at Clarks, and the closure left both her and her customers emotional.

Reflecting on her time at the store, Jill said, "It is a real shame. I was hoping to do another few years before I retired." Now, at 82, Jill plans to rest, enjoy time at the beach, and possibly engage in charity work. Though saddened by the shop’s closure, she expressed gratitude for her fulfilling career, calling it her "life" and noting that she wouldn't seek to start again elsewhere.
