Storm Ashley Leaves Thousands without Power after UK was Pounded by 80mph Winds

October 21, 2024

Storm Ashley, the first named storm of the season, caused significant disruption across Ireland and the UK, leaving over 50,000 people without power.

The storm brought heavy rainfall, causing rivers to overflow and coastal areas to be inundated by waves. Wind speeds reached up to 82 mph, with the highest recorded in Aberdaron, Scotland.

Many areas were already grappling with flooding and over 100 flood warnings were issued, with Scotland and parts of Wales particularly affected.

The A66 in northern England had to close due to the severe conditions but has since reopened. While the yellow weather warning for wind has now been lifted, flood warnings remain in place, particularly along the south Cornwall coast and the River Severn.
