Read Your Meter or to Avoid Overpaying Energy Bills

Nine million households could overpay on their energy bills if they fail to submit a meter reading by January 1, according to experts.

Submitting a reading ensures that estimated usage does not inflate bills, especially as energy prices fluctuate.

In addition, there are hidden fees tied to gift cards that must be checked properly. Two consumer experts highlighted charges that can eat into the value of the cards or complicate their use, such as dormancy fees, transaction charges, or limitations on where the cards can be spent.

With the holiday season in full swing, consumers are urged to take steps to avoid these financial pitfalls by promptly reading their meters and carefully reviewing the terms of any gift cards they purchase or receive.
