Zelle Outage Affects Customers at Multiple Banks Due to Vendor Issue

Experiencing Zelle issues? A vendor-related outage is impacting customers at several banks, including Truist and Navy Federal. Learn more about the cause and status  below.

A widespread Zelle outage is currently affecting customers at several U.S. banks, with the popular peer-to-peer payment service citing an issue caused by a third-party vendor.

According to DownDetector, reports of Zelle payment failures spiked Friday morning, as users across the country began experiencing problems initiating or receiving transfers.

A Zelle spokesperson confirmed the disruption in a statement, noting that "certain Zelle users at some financial institutions are not able to use Zelle at this time." They added that the company is “working diligently with our partners to resolve this matter as soon as possible,” and users may see transactions marked as "payment pending" in the meantime.

The disruption appears to stem from a technical issue involving Fiserv, a major financial technology provider that supports backend operations for numerous banks. While Fiserv has not issued a public response, Zelle identified the company as the source of the outage.

As of midday Friday, reports of service problems were beginning to taper off, according to DownDetector.

While Zelle has not released a list of affected banks, users from Truist and Navy Federal Credit Union have reported issues on social platforms and outage trackers.

One Truist customer expressed frustration, stating that their rent payment had been pending since Thursday night. "I feel like my money is just floating and no one will help or take accountability," the user wrote.

Bank of America also acknowledged disruptions. Spokesperson Matthew Card said that some customers are “experiencing a delay in sending and receiving certain payments,” attributing the issue to a vendor outage affecting multiple banks.

Zelle, operated by Early Warning Services (EWS)—a consortium owned by major banks including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo—handles billions in daily transactions between U.S. consumers. The platform is widely used for its near-instant transfers, making outages like this highly disruptive.

As of now, there is no estimated time for full resolution. Customers are advised to check with their individual banks and Zelle's official channels for updates.
