Trump, Harris locked in Dead Heat in 7 Battleground States

October 21, 2024

A recent Wall Street Journal poll of seven key battleground states shows a tight race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 election, with almost no separation between the two.

In states like North Carolina and Wisconsin, the two are tied, while Harris holds narrow leads in Arizona, Georgia, and Michigan. Trump, meanwhile, leads in Nevada and Pennsylvania. Overall, Trump leads Harris by just 1 point (46%-45%) across the seven states, with independents nearly evenly split (40% for Harris, 39% for Trump).

The poll highlights the intense polarisation, with 93% of Democrats and Republicans supporting their respective candidates. Voters favour Trump on issues like the economy, inflation, and immigration, while Harris is preferred on housing affordability, abortion, healthcare, and being seen as empathetic.

Democratic pollster Michael Bocian noted how tight the race is, saying, "It really could not be closer." Republican pollster David Lee also described the election as a "dead heat," suggesting that the final weeks leading up to the election will be crucial.

This close contest mirrors the 2020 election, although Harris is facing narrower leads than Biden did at the same time. Additionally, third-party candidates, who once had a more significant impact earlier this year, seem to be playing less of
a role now.
