Currently, university tuition fees for UK home students are capped at:
- England: £9,250 per year
- Wales: £9,250 per year
- Northern Ireland: £4,750 per year for Northern Irish students, £9,250 for other UK students
- Scotland: Free for most Scottish students, £9,250 for other UK students
This cap has been in place in England since 2017. However, university representatives have pointed out that if the cap had increased with inflation, fees would now range between £12,000 and £13,000 per year, highlighting the sector's need for increased funding.
Later today, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson is expected to announce potential tuition fee increases in England, coinciding with the scheduled end of the current fee freeze in 2025.
At that point, fees could rise in line with the RPIX inflation measure (excluding housing costs), and further adjustments may be outlined in the upcoming three-year spending review.
