Health Secretary Wes Streeting has expressed strong support for Chancellor Rachel Reeves, emphasizing the challenges she faces amid market volatility and economic pressures.

Speaking at the Jewish Labour Movement's annual conference, Mr. Streeting urged the public to give Ms. Reeves time to execute her long-term economic plans and acknowledged the significant burden of her role.

Mr. Streeting declared "total confidence" in Ms. Reeves' leadership, highlighting the extensive effort required to navigate the current economic landscape.

He reiterated that economic growth remains the government’s top priority, asserting that the Treasury must balance fiscal responsibility with the need to stimulate business growth.

He underscored the cabinet’s understanding of the difficult choices required and their collective responsibility to implement reforms and ensure value for money in their departments.

He also acknowledged the pressures on the chancellor, exacerbated by recent drops in the pound and rising government borrowing costs, which could necessitate spending cuts or tax increases.

International Development Minister Anneliese Dodds also defended the chancellor, praising her clarity of vision for the UK’s long-term economic plan and expressing confidence in its eventual success.

These remarks come as Ms. Reeves continues to grapple with market uncertainties and the broader economic landscape, which have sparked speculation about further fiscal measures. The health secretary’s comments reflect a concerted effort to bolster public and party confidence in the government’s economic leadership.
