Beyoncé has won the prestigious Album of the Year award at the 2025 Grammy Awards, marking a historic moment in her career. Despite being the most-nominated artist in Grammy history, she had previously been passed over in the top category four times.
With this win, Beyoncé becomes only the fourth woman of colour to take home the award—the first since Lauryn Hill 26 years ago.
The award was presented by members of the Los Angeles Fire Department, with Beyoncé’s 13-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, joining her on stage to accept the honour for her critically acclaimed album, Cowboy Carter.
"I’m honored," she said in her speech. "It’s been many, many years, and I just want to thank the Grammys, every songwriter, every collaborator, every producer—everyone who put in the hard work."
She dedicated her win to Linda Martell, the first commercially successful Black female country artist.
Beyoncé faced strong competition from artists including Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift, Andre 3000, and Jacob Collier.
Earlier in the evening, she also made history as the first Black woman to win Best Country Album, a moment that left her "still in shock." Handed the award by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé said:
"Wow, I really was not expecting this. I want to thank God that I'm able to do what I love after so many years."
She also addressed the barriers in the music industry, saying: "Genre is a code word to keep us in place as artists, and I just want to encourage us to do what we’re passionate about."
The Grammys ceremony also served as a fundraiser for victims of the devastating LA wildfires, making it a night where music and goodwill went hand in hand.
