Eggs Rise at Fastest Rate in Nearly 10 Years

Egg prices surged at their fastest rate in nearly a decade, contributing to a broad rise in consumer costs. While January CPI reports often show seasonal price adjustments, this year’s increase was particularly sharp across multiple categories.

Energy and food costs remained high, with egg prices soaring 15.2% from December to January, marking the largest monthly increase since June 2015. The spike, driven by a severe avian flu outbreak, has also led to widespread shortages.

Grocery prices as a whole jumped 0.5% from December, the fastest monthly increase in more than two years. According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, the egg index alone accounted for two-thirds of that increase.
