KFC, formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, is relocating its corporate headquarters from Kentucky from which it derived its first name, to Texas, marking a significant shift for the iconic fast-food brand.
The parent company Yum Brands announced Tuesday that KFC’s offices will move to Plano, Texas, where it will join sister brand Pizza Hut.
The decision is part of Yum’s strategy to consolidate its U.S. headquarters, which also includes Taco Bell in California and Habit Burger. The company stated that merging KFC’s operations with Pizza Hut’s will enhance collaboration across brands.
Despite the move, KFC plans to maintain a presence in Kentucky with a new flagship restaurant in Louisville. However, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed disappointment, stating that the company has long marketed the state’s heritage and culture.
KFC has faced increasing competition from rivals like Popeyes, Wingstop, and Raising Cane’s, with U.S. sales recently dropping 5%. To revamp its business, the chain has launched new restaurant concepts and will soon welcome a new CEO from Taco Bell.
Around 100 corporate employees in Louisville, along with 90 remote workers, will transition to Texas over the next six months. KFC follows a growing trend of major companies, including Tesla and Chevron, moving to Texas due to business-friendly policies and tax advantages.
