Passengers could save up to £90 on train fares thanks to a new feature on the Virgin Train Ticketing app, which allows users to book cheaper indirect journeys in a single transaction.

The feature is designed for those willing to sacrifice shorter travel times to benefit from significant cost reductions, with some savings reaching as much as 78%.

Examples of Savings:

  • London to Stockport: An indirect route via Crewe (arrival 11:26 am) costs £26.20 compared to £117.70 for a direct train arriving at 09:09 am.
  • Wilmslow to London: An indirect route via Crewe costs £48.00 compared to £144.40 for a direct service.

Additional Benefits:

  • Virgin Points: Passengers earn three Virgin Points for every £1 spent, with double points available on bookings until 15 December 2024. These points can be redeemed for train travel or rewards across Virgin’s ecosystem, including Virgin Atlantic flights and Virgin Hotels.

Comment on the Rail System:

Mark Plowright, director of Virgin Trains Ticketing, acknowledged the UK’s need for a simpler rail fares system, describing tools like split ticketing as a temporary fix rather than a permanent solution.

In the meantime, Virgin Trains Ticketing aims to provide more value to customers through innovations such as this.
