Democratic Lawmakers Slam Trump for not Making Good on Promise to Lower Food Prices

Democratic lawmakers, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Representative Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), have criticised President Donald Trump for failing to act on his campaign promise to lower food prices "immediately" upon taking office.

In a letter sent to Trump on Sunday, 20 Democratic lawmakers expressed frustration, accusing the president of focusing on unrelated priorities, including mass deportations and pardoning January 6 participants, during his first week in office.

Trump had made the high cost of groceries a central issue during his campaign, showcasing his commitment with symbolic displays such as Tic Tacs and grocery tables at rallies.

However, the letter notes that his initial executive orders have barely addressed the issue of rising food costs. The only related mention was a memo pledging to eliminate "harmful, coercive ‘climate’ policies driving up the costs of food and fuel,” which lacked any detailed plans or actionable policies to reduce grocery bills.

The criticism comes amid a continued rise in food prices, with Labour Department data revealing a 1.8% increase in grocery costs from December 2023 to December 2024. Egg prices experienced a staggering 36.8% hike, driven by a bird flu outbreak that has decimated poultry populations.

The letter urges the president to take immediate steps to address food inflation, emphasizing the urgency of the issue for American families struggling with higher costs at supermarkets.
The Trump administration has yet to responded to the lawmakers' concerns.
