Nearly All of Puerto Rico Left without Power ahead of Celebrations

A massive blackout has plunged nearly all of Puerto Rico into darkness as the island was gearing up for New Year's Eve celebrations.

Energy company Luma reported that approximately 90% of its 1.47 million customers were affected by the outage, which began in the early hours of the morning.

According to Luma, the blackout appears to have been caused by a failure of an underground power line. Officials have warned that it could take up to two days to fully restore power across the island.

The timing of the outage is particularly disruptive as residents and businesses were preparing for year-end festivities.

Authorities and utility workers are working urgently to resolve the issue and minimise the impact on the celebrations.
