The UK's universal winter fuel payment, once benefiting over 11 million people, was scaled back by Labour, now reaching around 1.3 million who meet certain criteria.
This benefit—£200 for those aged 60-79 and £300 for older recipients—has remained unchanged since 2000, despite surging inflation and energy costs.
Adjusted for inflation, the £200 payment would be around £370 today; if aligned with rising energy prices, it could be close to £1,000 and would have exceeded £1,200 during the 2022-23 energy crisis.
