Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations, expected to draw around 50,000 attendees for a street party and fireworks display, have been cancelled due to severe weather conditions.
Organisers defended the decision, citing insufficient time to prepare and concerns for safety amidst the challenging weather. This marks the first cancellation of the event in nearly 20 years.
Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies reported that the decision has sparked criticism from business leaders, who predict millions of pounds in losses from the cancellation.
Many had hoped the event would provide a significant boost to the local economy during the holiday season.
Amber and yellow weather warnings for snow and rain remain in effect across Scotland, highlighting the safety risks that led to the cancellation.
