Google revised its Super Bowl ad featuring a Wisconsin cheese market owner using its Gemini AI tool after a factual error about Gouda cheese consumption was flagged by social media users.
The original AI-generated text in the ad claimed that Gouda accounts for "50 to 60 percent of the world’s consumption," which was quickly debunked.
Google Cloud executive Jerry Dischler later defended the claim, noting that multiple sites, including Cheese.com, cited the statistic. However, the accuracy of that figure remains questionable.
Following the backlash, Google updated the commercial, removing the statistic entirely. The company stated that it consulted the Wisconsin Cheese Mart owner, who suggested using Gemini to rewrite the product description without the disputed fact. The revised version now reflects that change.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about generative AI’s reliability, as Google's AI-generated search results have faced criticism for inaccuracies in the past.
Despite these challenges, Google continues to push Gemini AI across its products to compete with OpenAI, Meta, and emerging Chinese AI firms.
