In a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity on Tuesday, President Donald Trump acknowledged that inflation is rising again, despite his campaign promise to lower prices immediately. He attributed the increase to excessive government spending under the Biden administration.
“Inflation is back,” Trump stated. “I had nothing to do with it. These people have run the country and spent money like nobody has ever spent.”
Recent data from the Bureau of Labour Statistics confirms that inflation spiked more than expected last month, driven by higher fuel and egg prices.
January saw the largest monthly increase since August 2023, with consumer prices rising 3% year-over-year for the first time since June 2024.
While Trump cannot be directly blamed for the latest inflation report, his claim that Biden’s policies are solely responsible is debatable. Economists continue to discuss the factors behind inflation’s surge during Biden’s presidency, which peaked at a 40-year high in June 2022 before gradually declining.
During the Fox News interview, Trump criticised what he called Biden’s “Green New Scam,” though no such legislation has passed. He claimed, “They were given $9 trillion to throw out the window... It’s the greatest scam in the history of the country.” He noted,
