Donald Trump, the US president-elect, has criticised the UK's energy policies, particularly its focus on renewable energy.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, he described the UK's approach as "a very big mistake," advocating for increased oil production in the North Sea and an abandonment of wind energy.
Trump's comments followed news from November that Apache, a Texas-based oil producer, announced its withdrawal from the North Sea by 2029, citing the rising windfall tax on fossil fuel producers as a contributing factor.
“The UK is making a very big mistake. Open up the North Sea. Get rid of windmills!” Trump wrote, signaling his ongoing support for traditional energy sources over renewables.
The North Sea has long been a significant oil-producing region, and the UK's transition toward greener energy has faced criticism from those who argue it may deter investment in fossil fuels and impact energy security.
