A tragic incident on the M5 near Taunton has led to the death of a 17-year-old girl who, while being transported to custody, exited a stationary Avon and Somerset Police vehicle and was subsequently struck by a passing car.
The accident occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on Monday, with police confirming her death at the scene. Her family is being supported by specialised officers.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) promptly initiated an investigation, sending investigators to gather evidence to understand the events leading up to the tragedy. According to IOPC officials, the incident involved recent police contact, prompting the mandatory referral.
In response, Detective Chief Superintendent Rachel Shields of Avon and Somerset Police expressed deep condolences to the girl’s family and outlined efforts to offer welfare support to those affected, including officers and witnesses.
The M5 motorway, closed overnight for investigation, reopened Tuesday morning. Authorities are appealing for any dashcam footage from witnesses to aid the investigation.
