DeepSeek Hit by 'Large-Scale' Cyberattack Following AI Market Shakeup

January 29, 2025

Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek, which triggered a $1 trillion sell-off in US tech stocks earlier this week, claims it has been targeted by "large-scale malicious attacks."

A message on the company's website warns users that registration may be affected due to the attacks, though existing users can still log in normally.

DeepSeek recently became the most-downloaded free app on Apple's App Store. Its claims of training an AI model at a fraction of the cost of US giants like OpenAI sent shockwaves through the market, leading to record losses for major American tech firms.

Nvidia suffered the largest one-day loss in US history on Monday, dropping nearly $600 billion (£482bn) in value. Other tech giants, including Dell, Oracle, and Super Micro Computer, saw their stock prices fall by more than 8%.
