Farmers Protest Inheritance Tax Changes at Downing Street

November 19, 2024

Thousands of farmers are expected to rally outside Downing Street today in the largest protest yet against the government’s planned changes to inheritance tax (IHT).

The new rules, set to take effect in April 2026, will impose a 20% tax on farms valued over £1 million. Farmers argue this will force land sales, harm food security, and threaten the future of British agriculture.

The government claims only the wealthiest estates—around 500—will be affected, but farmers dispute this, citing data suggesting that 66% of farms are worth more than £1 million.

Farmers like Will Weaver, a fourth-generation farmer, face staggering tax bills. "It’s more than our profit in any year in the last decade," he said, fearing his family will have to sell land to pay the tax.

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has criticised Labour for breaking promises made to farmers. Max Sealy, from the NFU Dairy Board, called the tax a "badly implemented policy" that will harm productivity and rural growth.

The Treasury defends the reforms, citing the need to address a fiscal deficit while pledging £5 billion to support sustainable food production. Protests today will include speeches by agricultural leaders and public figures, followed by a march around Parliament Square.

Police say they are prepared to ensure the demonstration proceeds safely and lawfully.
