Disease-causing Salmonella Could Help Combat Bowel Cancer, Study Suggests

November 19, 2024

A recent study suggests that engineered salmonella could be used in cancer treatments, specifically for bowel cancer.

Salmonella typically prevents T cells from attacking cancer cells by depleting the amino acid asparagine. Researchers have identified the protein responsible for this and are now exploring ways to improve salmonella-based therapies.

This breakthrough could potentially lead to more effective treatments for bowel and other cancers, offering hope to patients.

The study was funded by Cancer Research UK and published in EMBO Molecular Medicine.
