Breaking News: US Closes Kyiv Embassy after Warning of an Air Attack

November 20, 2024

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has temporarily closed due to credible intelligence indicating a significant air attack on November 20.

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs announced this decision on social media, advising embassy staff to shelter in place and recommending that U.S. citizens in Kyiv be prepared to do the same if an air alert is issued.

This development follows the Biden administration's recent authorisation for Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles against targets within Russia. Subsequently, Ukraine reportedly launched six of these missiles, striking a Russian military facility in the Bryansk region.

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved an updated nuclear doctrine. This revision allows for the consideration of nuclear weapon use if Russia faces a conventional missile assault supported by a nuclear power.

The timing of this policy change suggests it is a direct reaction to the U.S.'s decision to permit Ukraine's use of long-range missiles.

These events have escalated tensions between Russia and the West, raising concerns about potential retaliatory actions and the broader implications for regional and global security.
